Fitzwilliam Museum
Museums and Galleries
Standing outside this magnificent building, you are not only looking at one of the finest museums and art galleries in the country but, once again, another part of the University of Cambridge. Its vast collection comprises a range of art and artefacts from furniture, pottery, paintings, prints, and sculpture from all eras and all over the world.
If you are particularly interested in modern art, you might like to visit Kettle’s Yard, another of the University’s museums, situated in Castle Street.

There are Departmental museums as well – spot the full-size whale skeleton at the entrance to the Museum of Zoology. There’s ancient Greek and Roman sculpture in the Museum of Classical Archaeology, fossils and dinosaurs in the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences, and everything from hardy geraniums to the exotic Titan Arum (that allegedly smells of rotting flesh!) in the University Botanic Garden.

These fantastic facilities are mostly free of charge and are accessible to everyone. Many of the departments and museums have also put together online resources, which are a great way for you to expand your knowledge and enrich your understanding of your subject even before you come to Cambridge to study.

The University runs a range of outreach projects from educational activities for schools and colleges to public lectures and charitable work, in which Cambridge students and staff invest over 370,000 hours of their time each year – which is a lot of time!
