Market Square (technically called Market Hill as it only could be in this flattest of cities) is a great place to start talking about shopping in Cambridge. A market has been here since Saxon times, now selling hats, second-hand clothes and music as well as fruit and veg, bread and cheese. People come from miles around to shop in Cambridge, attracted by its shopping centres, High Street regulars and interesting boutiques.
Of course, this is also a great place to get some food if you do not feel like eating in College. Cambridge’s multitude of cafes and restaurants has been serving hard-up students for years and price themselves accordingly. Whatever you choose, you can feel safe in the knowledge that you will never be stuck with baked beans unless you want to be!
The wide range of shops and market stalls in Cambridge means that it’s easy to find reasonably priced food, clothes and other bits and bobs that you might need. A few minutes walk away is the brand new shopping centre, the Grand Arcade, and it’s not much further to the Grafton, as comprehensive a shopping complex as you could wish to find. There is also a great range of ethnic shops along Mill Road where you are guaranteed just about any kind of cuisine, and many quirky bargains besides.
In terms of partying, Cambridge has a lot to offer. All Colleges have their own bars with student prices and many of the pubs and bars in town also offer happy hours and student discounts. With students making up 20 per cent of Cambridge’s population, the city is not just student-friendly, it’s student heaven.
There are several nightclubs in Cambridge for the serious party-animals, with many offering student nights, often in collaboration with the Cambridge University Students’ Union (CUSU). And there are plenty of gigs – big bands all have Cambridge on their tour itineraries. Check out venues like The Corn Exchange and The Junction for more information.
The ultimate parties are the College May Balls which take place in June each year. These give all students a great opportunity to get dressed up and party all night. See if you can still be up for the ‘survivors’ photograph at six in the morning!
