St Andrew's Street
Transport and Sustainability
St Andrew’s Street is one of the city centre’s busiest shopping streets, and not far from the local bus station. As Cambridge still has the street layout of a small medieval city, it is easily crossed on foot. Most students do not bring cars at all – here, the bicycle is king.
In fact, no railing, lamp-post or bollard is safe... any immovable object is likely to have a bike locked to it at some point in the day. With most people cycling to work or to lectures, Cambridge has excellent cycle routes all over the city. It also has the added advantage of being notoriously flat! Being a relatively small city everywhere is within easy cycling distance, providing you with a healthy, green and cheap means of transport. Cambridge regularly picks up awards for recycling, sustainability, and low carbon emissions. And you on your bike will help all that.

Of course, for days when you don’t fancy cycling (it’s raining – or worse, snowing) there are several regular bus services linking the University in the city centre and the outlying University departments. The frequent Park & Ride service also makes a trip into the city stress-free and simple – especially for visitors from out of town.

And when you are living here, you are not stranded. The railway station is only a 15 minute walk from the city centre. London is less than 50 minutes away and relatively cheap with a student railcard. The central bus station is not far from here on Drummer Street and further down the road at Parkside is where National Express coaches go from. So you are connected!
