Cambridge Arts Theatre
Arts, Politics and Societies
With several cinemas, theatres and music venues, you will get to see all the latest blockbusters and independent movies, excellent touring shows and top bands. There are also many University societies and clubs so you will never be stuck for something to do in the evening.
If you have done your work for the day and want to relax and be entertained, then this might be the place for you. The Cambridge Arts Theatre is one of several theatres in the city offering everything from Shakespeare to stand-up, and including some great student rates.

If being on the stage – rather than in the audience – is more your scene, then you will be pleased to know that there are nearly forty different drama societies, of which Cambridge University Footlights is one of the most well known, giving us John Cleese, Stephen Fry, Griff Rhys Jones, Mitchell & Webb and leading Kazakhstani journalist Borat Sagdiyev.

If you are not a budding thespian, fear not! There are over six hundred different societies at the University so you can have a go at yoga, belly-dancing, tiddlywinks, bobbin lace making... the list is endless. The best way to check out what is on offer is through CUSU – the Cambridge University Students’ Union.

CUSU is ‘the voice of Cambridge students’ and is affiliated with the National Union of Students, otherwise known as the NUS. When you become a student here, you are automatically a member. CUSU is a bit different from most other students’ unions in that it does not have a designated bar or club attached to it but it helps organise what are called ‘ents’, or entertainment events, at some of the nightclubs in Cambridge, so there is no chance of missing out on any parties.

Don’t worry about remembering all this now. CUSU organises a Freshers’ Fair at the start of the year to introduce you to all of the different societies. Sign up! Get excited! Get involved!
“Students can be involved in the political process at every level and never feel like they don’t have a voice in Cambridge.”
Mark Fletcher, CUSU President 2007-09
