Libraries and Learning Resources
It will come as no surprise that the University of Cambridge has one of the best libraries in the world – known as the UL – the University Library. With over seven million books, journals and manuscripts you are guaranteed to find what you are looking for, however obscure.
The reason for the UL’s vast collection is that it is a Legal Deposit library, one of only a few in the country, which means it holds a copy of every book ever published in the UK. In keeping with the times, it now includes an ever-growing collection of electronic materials too.
You would think that there were enough books in Cambridge in this building alone but this is just one of 149 libraries in the city. Others are tucked away in historic buildings, such as the Pepys Library and the Wren Library or flaunted in iconic modern buildings. Many Colleges and faculties have recently built new libraries, containing not just books, but state-of-the-art e-learning facilities, seminar rooms and media centres. With so many libraries at your disposal here, the days of fighting over one copy of an important text are over... unless you really want to, of course.
Computing facilities are also offered centrally by departments and within each College too. With the vast majority of student bedrooms also containing network points, you will never have to worry about getting online.
If you want to take up a foreign language, there is the Language Centre on Downing Place, which can be used by all students, even those not studying modern languages. There you can learn no fewer than 140 different languages – though perhaps not all at once!
So, all of this should make studying a painless, almost light hearted experience, unless you forget to take your library books back on time…
“The library does tend to get quite busy during exam term but, in a way, it kind of gives you a good sense of camaraderie when you get there, with everyone working late into the night and stuff. It can be very good fun.”
