Further Reading and Web-sites
Much has been written concerning the establishment of the geological framework and the
antiquity of humans, including the role played by quarries. A good starting point would be A. Bowdoin van Riper’s
Men among the Mammoths: Victorian Science and the Discovery of Human Prehistory of 1993 (London: University of Chicago Press).
Perhaps the most accessible overview of later British prehistory, with a strong emphasis on fenland sites, is Francis Pryor’s
Britain BC: Life in Britain and Ireland before the Romans (2003; London: Harper Collins). Those wishing for greater detail can go to a listing of more specialised publications concerned with the three quarries and all relevant Cambridge Archaeological Unit
Reports (the latter can be consulted either in the County’s Sites and Monuments Record Office or by contacting the Unit on 01223-327802).
Other web-sites concerned with various facets of the region’s past include those
for Flag Fen (www.flagfen.com), the County Council (www.fenpast.info)
and, at the University, the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology
(http://museum-server.archanth.cam.ac.uk) and the Sedgwick Museum
(www.sedgwickmuseum.org.)
